| Published in 1967, Friday; or, the other Island marks the French writer Michel Tournier's literary debut and subverts the traditional colonial narrative of Robinson Crusoe. The longing for a return to nature constitutes one of the core themes of this novel. Taking the principle of intersubjectivity as the starting point, this paper analyzes the relationship between Robinson, Friday and the island, and the essence of existence. This research explores the non-anthropocentric ecological ideas embodied in the novel, and reveals its unique value in ecological criticism, as well as its theoretical implications for addressing contemporary ecological crises and constructing a symbiotic relationship between people and between humanity and nature. |
