| Eva Trout is Elizabeth Bowen's final novel, which presents a female anti-Bildungsroman. The protagonist, Eva loses both of her parents, and struggles to assimilate into society as an adult. Indulged in the maternal world of silence yet forced to confront the patriarchal society of hurry, she eventually dies on her wedding day. This article examines Eva's journey through three dimensions: her symbiosis with the maternal world, her recognition of the symbolic order, and the tragic coronation as an adult. By depicting Eva's fate, Bowen deconstructs the narrative structure of the traditional Bildungsroman, offering a new perspective for the female growth narrative and the construction of modern subjectivity. |
