| Xia Lei and his son Xia Yingxing both attained official positions through the imperial examination system. Their legacy as the "father-son pair from Changsha" forged a lasting legacy, transforming their national achievements into regional distinction. Xia Yingxing served as the chief editor of the Wanli editor of the Wanli-era Gazetteer of Yancheng County, thereby initiating a scholarly tradition in a region that had lacked a county gazetteer for over 1, 600 years. He also authored the Epitaph for Magistrate Yu and the Stele Inscription on Magistrate Sun's Prohibition of Reclamation on the Tidal Flats, which etched local governance practices—including water management, urban relocation, and reclamation prohibitions—alongside the sentiments of both officials and commoners into public memory. Research on the Xia Yingxing family and their writings demonstrates how local lineages utilized the national examination system to embed themselves in regional society and, through textual reproduction, fostered dynamic interactions among "individuals, place, and literature. "This process not only established paradigms of local sages but also sustained historical continuity and cultural identity, offering a valuable micro-paradigm for local studies. |
