| Chen Weisong, the renowned Ci poet and founder of the Yangxian school during the Ming-Qing transition, experienced a dramatic reversal of fortune: from affluence in his early life to destitution in his later years. This stark transformation heightened his sensitivity to social phenomena during the Kangxi period, leading him to channel his social criticism through the medium of Ci poetry. His collection Jialing Ci inherits the Tang-Song tradition of speaking out against injustice while embodying both social critique and anti-traditionalist sentiments. The work primarily expresses class antagonism between the ruled and ruling classes, intertwined with ethnic tensions. This complex social commentary expanded the scope of Ci poetry beyond what had been achieved since Xin Qiji′s works, demonstrating both contemporary relevance and innovation. Chen′s anti-traditionalist stance manifests in his dismissal of civil service examination success and his sympathetic portrayal of women, reflecting his unconventional personality and humanitarian values. His identity as an impoverished scholar fundamentally shapes the thematic underpinnings of Jialing Ci. |
