| Sandra Cisneros is a renowned contemporary Mexican-American writer who focuses on the living conditions of immigrants. In Caramelo, Cisneros depicts numerous "silent" Mexican immigrants who navigate the U. S. -Mexico border and face various predicaments such as social discrimination, identity loss, and class oppression. These characters often grapple with feelings of shame, worthlessness, and inferiority. Through narrative techniques that link the characters′ psychological growth with shifts in narrative space, the novel portrays the process of three generations of protagonists gradually constructing their identities. Using the shawl as a central motif, the story explores the fate of Mexican immigrants′ self-struggle, exposing the myth of the "American Dream" in American society. It expresses the immigrants′ longing and demands for freedom and equality, while hinting at concerns over the fate of Mexican immigrants. |
