| Claude McKay′s Back to Harlem is a panoramic portrayal of urban African American life in the early 20th century. Through the friendship and subtle psychological conflicts between the characters Jack and Ray, McKay explores different cultural identity orientations, showcasing the complexity of Harlem as a melting pot of black culture. The conflict between the food truck chef and his subordinates in the novel touches upon deeper black class divisions and the potential violent conflicts that arise from them. The article uses Selin′s cultural conflict theory to analyze the implicit and explicit cultural conflicts mentioned above, revealing the complexity within the Black community during the Harlem Renaissance. |
