The Wei, Jin, Southern, and Northern Dynasties represent a pivotal era in the development of Chinese classical literature and aesthetics. Shishuo Xinyu encapsulates the socio-historical conditions of this period, as well as the life attitudes and aesthetic experiences of Wei-Jin scholars. The character appraisals in the Wei-Jin period are rooted in the authenticity and intrinsic qualities of individuals, emphasizing the harmonious integration of humans with nature, mutual appreciation and communication among individuals, and self-transcendence. This reflects a form of humanistic concern characterized by harmonious coexistence and mutual enlightenment, which resonates with modern ecological aesthetic concepts. This study explores the aesthetic connotations of character appraisals from the dimensions of human-nature relationships, interpersonal interactions, and self-transcendence. |
