A Streetcar Named Desire, a representative play of Tennessee Williams, tells the ethical tragedy of the "Southern Belle" Blanche, which is in abundance of ethical connotation. In the play, Blanche tries to solve ethical crisis by reconstructing her ethical identity, but she is trapped in ethical dilemma for many times. Due to her weak ethical consciousness, Blanche violates ethical taboo and makes wrong ethical choices in order to satisfy her sexual needs, thus leading to her tragedy. The play shows Blanche′s endeavor in the process of constructing her ethical identity, the ethical dilemma she has to face, and the role of Sphinx factor when she makes ethical choices, so as to explain the primary cause of her tragic fate and reveal the ethical significance of the play. |
