| Reference,as a grammatical device,is discussed in this paper,which highlights the classification of generic reference.With the two dimentions of definiteness(definite and indefinite) and number(singular and plural),four kinds of generic reference are formed in English,i.e.indefinite singular generic,indefinite plural generic,definite singular generic and definite plural generic.This paper also tries to expound the grammatical function(s) of each under the cognitive perspective. |
