| faithfulness (or fidelity) is an acknowledged principle in translation. However, in practice, faithfulness is difficult to achieve, especially in translating classical Chinese poetry. This paper discusses this problem from the point of view of sentiment, contents, rhythm, thematic meaning--four elements composing a poem. It stresses that all these four aspects are integrated instead of isolated or contradictory. Though it is hard to be faithful in all aspects to the original text, it is quite possible, provided the translator is determined to. |
